TopZinc RS is a protector for concrete cathodic protection of reinforcement directly connected to the smallest possible size rebar, especially dedicated to renovated structures and structures with reduced concrete cover. A zinc protector for concrete cathodic protection of reinforcement is used when we have unrestricted and free access to reinforcing bars. After concreting the reinforcement elements with previously attached zinc protectors for concrete cathodic protection of the TopZinc RS reinforcement, the process of corrosion protection of the reinforcement bars begins. Zinc protector for concrete cathodic protection of TopZinc RS reinforcement protects reinforcing bars in reinforced concrete elements subjected to the exposure class in accordance with PN-EN 206-1:2003. Each of the zinc protectors for concrete cathodic protection of TopZinc RS reinforcement has four metallic connecting wires, a special recess along the long side, which is used to properly connect the protector to the rebar. Zinc protector for concrete cathodic protection of TopZinc RS reinforcement bars comes in two different sizes due to the fact that it contains different weight zinc cores inside:
TopZinc RS – variant 70 h:width:thick [mm] 15:30:55 – with a zinc core weight of 70g
TopZinc RS – version 210 h:width:thick [mm] 15:60:65 – with zinc core weight 210g
In the case of repairs of structures in which the concrete is contaminated with chlorides and the lagging is carbonated, repairs performed only with the use of repair materials are not effective. The standard requirements contain restrictions on the content of chloride ions in repair mortars for filling cavities in concrete. When the repaired reinforced concrete structure comes into contact with the liquid contained in the pores of the concrete and contains chlorides with the liquid from the pores of the fresh repair mortar without chlorides, according to the principle of equalization of solution concentrations, chlorides will migrate to the fresh repair mortar. This will lead to corrosion in reinforced concrete of the „traditionally repaired” reinforcement. In order to select the number of zinc protectors for the concrete cathodic protection of the reinforcement, we need to know the diameter and length of the reinforcement bars to be protected, the exposure class according to the PN-EN 206-1 standard  and the assumed number of years of protection. In such cases, in accordance with the European harmonized standard PN-EN 1504-9, other than traditional methods of structural repair should be implemented, e.g. in accordance with principle 10, concrete cathodic protection using zinc protectors for concrete cathodic protection of the TopZinc RS reinforcement. After calculating the number of needed protectors for the concrete cathodic protection of the reinforcement, it is recommended to arrange the protectors for the concrete cathodic protection of the reinforcement in such a way as to ensure an even distribution of current along the entire length of the reinforcing bar.
